| Unique Kalofer Lace
Kalofer lace successfully expands the brilliance of European shuttle lace. It is designed for the interior of homes and is rarely used to decorate clothes. From the few weaving techniques brought from Europe, Kalofer’s lace-makers created over 110 new techniques. They enrich the lace with their own stylized forms originating from the natural environment, for example as roses, wheat-ear, birds, leaves, animals, nets, etc. The first school of lace was established in Kalofer on September 9, 1910 in the Women’s Monastery and worked until 1946. Today, the lace continues to survive in its original form and is one of Kalofer's living traditions.
Join us for the annual Kalofer Lace Festival! Here you can see firsthand how the lace is made and try your hand at the unique weaving technique. Every year the Festival takes place on August 15th in the town center. Contact Kalofer's Information Center for more details. |
